Matomo 5

One-Click Installation

Matomo 5 Initialization:

Overview:

This guide will walk you through initializing Matomo 5 on your AWS instance in just one click. The setup process is streamlined using our custom script, designed for ease of use and efficiency. Before starting the script, ensure the minimum requirement is met.

Pro Tip: We recommend associating an AWS Elastic IP with your instance before running the setup. This prevents your IP address from changing when the instance is stopped and restarted.

Please note: there is no browser setup wizard in this build. Matomo, your administrator account and your first site are all created while the script runs. Guides written for earlier builds describe an eight step wizard covering the system check, database details, superuser form and website form. None of those screens appear any more.

Step 1: Access Your AWS Instance

1. Launch Your AWS EC2 Instance:

  • Choose your desired AWS EC2 instance type. (Recommended: t3a.small / t3.small)
  • Open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group.
  • Once the instance is running, connect to it via SSH.

2. Connect to the Instance:

  • Open your terminal (Mac/Linux) or use an SSH client (e.g., PuTTY for Windows).
  • Run the following SSH command:
ssh ec2-user@<your-aws-public-ip>

3. Run the Initialization Script:

  • To initiate the installation, run the following command:
/usr/local/bin/egl_init.sh.x
  • Note: This script automates the entire installation process. While it runs, ensure your terminal remains active, and do not close the session. It typically takes two to four minutes: the application is downloaded, then Matomo creates its database, your administrator account and your first site before the site is served. The script generates new credentials for this instance.

Step 2: Instance Set Up and Installation

1. Completion Confirmation:

  • Once the installation is finished, you will see a summary on the screen that includes your administrator login.
  • Write the password down. It is generated for this instance and is not stored anywhere you can read it back.

Your Matomo is installed and ready to use.

Your analytics: http://<your-public-ip>/

++++++++++++ Administrator login +++++++++++++++++++
Username: mtmadmin
Password: <generated for your instance>

2. Access the Web Interface:

  • Open your web browser and navigate to http://<your-public-ip> (port 80):
http://<your-public-ip>
  • You will be greeted by the sign-in screen. There is no setup wizard, because Matomo is installed for you during initialization.

3. Sign in:

  • Sign in with mtmadmin and the password shown in the summary.
  • You will arrive at your Matomo dashboard. It is empty until your site starts sending data, which is the next step.
  • Change the administrator password and set a real email address under the account menu, top right, then Personal, Settings. The account is created with a placeholder address, and Matomo uses it for password resets.

Step 3: Start Measuring Your Site

  • A site named My website has already been created so that Matomo has something to show you.
  • Open Administration, the cog icon, then Websites, Manage. Rename it to your own site and set its URL.
  • Go to Administration, Websites, Tracking Code and copy the JavaScript snippet into every page of your site, just before the closing </head> tag.
  • Visit your site once, then return to Matomo. Your first visit appears in Visitors, Visits Log within a minute or two.

Please note: if your website is served over HTTPS, port 443 must be open on this instance before the tracking snippet can reach it. A browser will not load a plain HTTP tracker from a secure page.

Step 4: Add Your Own Domain and SSL

  • Your Matomo is served over plain HTTP until you associate a domain. To use your own domain name with a free SSL certificate, run:
sudo /usr/local/bin/egl-setup-domain.sh.x

Important Notes:

  • Scheduled report processing is already running.
It runs in the background on a schedule and is what keeps your dashboard fast as traffic grows. There is nothing to start and no file to edit. Guides written for earlier builds tell you to edit a cron file on the server; that step no longer applies.
  • Outgoing Email:
This instance does not send email until you configure an outgoing mail server under Administration, System, General settings. Until then, password resets and scheduled report emails will not be delivered.
  • Mail Sending Blockage:
AWS may have email-sending restrictions in place by default. Before using the instance for email sending, submit a request to AWS to lift the restriction on outbound email traffic.
  • Geolocation:
Matomo guesses a visitor’s country from their browser language until you install a geolocation database, which is more accurate. Set one up under Administration, System, Geolocation.
  • Do not run the initialization script a second time
on an instance where Matomo is already installed. Each run generates new database passwords, and an existing database keeps the ones it was created with, so the two no longer match. If this happens, contact [email protected] rather than running it again.
